CEC standard 3 says that beginning special education teachers have a clear understanding of content. Instructors ask questions to gather knowledge, listen to professionals, contemplate their instructional options, and collaborate with others to implement their instructional plans. Special education teachers organize and integrate their knowledge of subject content when planning and teaching lessons, providing modifications and accommodations when appropriate. HLPs 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 21 align with this standard.
Artifact 1
To demonstrate competency in standard 3, I have included the lesson plan that is associated with my third observation during my fall semester of internship. My placement was in a co-taught setting. At the time this lesson was created, my students were learning how to add and subtract three-digit numbers that contained decimals. The class had a group of learners that were struggling to correctly solve these problems, and it was clear that they needed some extra practice adding and subtracting without decimals in a small group setting. Before I selected students for the group, I collaborated with the general education teacher to obtain assessment information. I also collaborated with my mentor and another general education teacher to help me determine the best strategy for these students. Students were pulled on three separate occasions to practice solving addition and subtracting using an open number line and base 10 drawings to help improve their skills. I have also included a short analysis of the data from that lesson.
Artifact 2
Artifact two is a lesson plan I created during the spring semester of my internship for my resource math class. The students were learning special angle pairs. This lesson features explicit instruction as well as a hands-on activity that required the students to "dance" between the angle types. I have included the slide show I created for the dancing portion of the lesson, the lesson plan, as well as a reflection on the lesson that includes analysis of the independent practice data.
